Supporting earthquake-affected communities through radio in Nepal
This research brief outlines how, after the 2015 Nepal earthquake, BBC Media Action initiated radio programs like Milijuli Nepali and KathaMaala to aid in reconstruction. These programs focused on educating communities about earthquake-resistant building techniques, accessing government housing grants, and involving women in livelihood activities. By providing vital information through trusted local radio stations, the programs facilitated safer reconstruction efforts in 14 severely affected districts and helped communities to better prepare for future disasters, with a focus on practical, locally adapted solutions.
Key recommendations are as follow:
- Continue using radio to communicate disaster resilience information.
- Improve awareness of retrofitting techniques to speed reconstruction.
- Encourage livelihood diversification to support long-term recovery.
- Promote women's roles in rebuilding and disaster preparedness.
