This book sets out the opportunities and emerging challenges in the area of sustainable development, and identifies innovative means for addressing them. It clearly demonstrates that reorienting our education systems in line with the principles of sustainable development is essential for helping learners to understand and act upon such threats as disasters, climate change, poverty, food scarcity and the loss of biodiversity.

It includes a number of entries discussing disaster risk reduction (DRR) in education and development, such as UNICEF’s initiative supporting child-centred relevant education. The latter incorporates DRR, climate change and environmental curricula to empower children with the knowledge, skills and values that help them prepare for disasters in the short-term and help them adapt, thrive, and live sustainably in a changing environment in the long-term.
