This summary volume is an attempt to capture the context, motivations, initiation, planning, implementation and the outcomes of the International Polar Year (IPY) 2007–2008, as well as the lessons derived from this key undertaking. It introduces new research and organizational paradigms that will have a lasting legacy of their own. It shows the power of integrative vision, and consolidates a new transdisciplinary approach that now includes biology, human health, social sciences, and the humanities, including the knowledge of extreme weather events, future risks, sensitivities and adaptive strategies, in addition to meteorology, glaciology, oceanography, geophysics, geology, and other traditional polar research fields. It sends a powerful message about the societal value of advanced research into rapid environmental change across the polar regions.
