The impact of the 2023 earthquakes on °Õü°ù°ì¾±²â±ð's presidential and parliamentary elections
This case study examines the dynamics of holding elections in the aftermath of disasters. . It provides information on the legal and institutional background of elections in °Õü°ù°ì¾±²â±ð and discusses the practical matters of organizing elections in the post-earthquake context and results, with tentative lessons learned. On 6 February 2023, with a nine-hour interval, two earthquakes measuring 7.8 and 7.5 on the Richter scale struck southern °Õü°ù°ì¾±²â±ð. The earthquakes struck approximately four months before the country's 2023 presidential and legislative elections.
Lessons can be drawn from °Õü°ù°ì¾±²â±ð's experiences after these earthquakes. All administrative authorities related to elections should have plans and necessary resources for such unforeseen disasters. These plans should include solutions for practical voting day matters and the whole electoral cycle, including electoral rolls and other key public records. Considering the benefits of conducting such processes electronically through e-government applications, as seen in °Õü°ù°ì¾±²â±ð's example, the widespread adoption of such applications could be deemed beneficial for problem-solving in other contexts.
