Description
This master program initiated by Malaysia-Japan International Institute of Technology (MJIIT) of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) in Kuala Lumpur is the first Master’s degree in Disaster Risk Management in Malaysia that is taught by both Japanese and Malaysian DRM experts. It aims to develop highly-skilled human resources who can be leaders in the field of disaster risk management. This program is designed mainly for entry to mid-career professionals for them to expand and upgrade their knowledge and skills in disaster risk management. This is a one-year full time program covering fundamental principle, technical skills and scientific knowledge related to disaster risk management.

The programme also includes a two-week attachment in Japan in which students are able to acquire hands-on experience in Disaster Risk Management issues through field work in Japan.
Special features of the programme
The programme is supported by the Japanese University Consortium (JUC), consisting of members including Tsukuba University, Kyoto University, Kyushu University, Yamaguchi University, Shibaura Institute of Technology, Kanazawa University, National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Prevention (NIED), International Centre for Water Hazard and Risk Management (ICHARM) and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). There are also opportunities to collaborate with university and research institutions across other ASEAN countries through the ASEAN University Network (AUN) administered under the JICA project, AUN/SEED-Net (http://www.seed-net.org/).
Japan Attachment Programme
Full time MDRM students will have an opportunity to participate in a two-week attachment in Japan which students will be able to acquire hands-on experience in Disaster Risk Management issues through field work in Japan.
The objectives of this module are:
- To understand policies and measures of comprehensive disaster risk management (DRM) in Japan
- To understand integrated flood management in Japan through lectures and field visits
- To be able to discuss on future possibilities of joint research by understanding examples of DRM research in Japan
- To understand DRM practices in Japan and consider application in Malaysia where possible

Admission requirement
General Entry Requirements
Bachelor degree in science, technology or engineering or related fields with a CGPA of 3.0 from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia or any other recognized institutions of higher learning.
For degrees other than those mentioned above or CGPA of less than 3.0, the minimum working experience of two years in the related field is required.

Health Requirement
International student must be certified by a medical doctor to be in good health for the issuance of a student pass and/or student registration.
Student Visa Requirement
International students are required to have a student pass to study in Malaysia. UTM will assist international students in obtaining a visa and student pass.
