PH.D. course on climate strategy and adaptation economics

This course provides the basics of climate strategy formulation from corporate to international level, with a focus on climate adaptation and bringing together mitigation and adaptation strategy. Drivers, benefits and challenges at different scales and sectors. Change management. emphasis on corporate strategy, bringing in experience from the corporate sector. Students will also gain insights into climate economics, focusing both on mitigation and adaptation; from theory to specific cases. Focus on economic analysis tools, and decision support to enable more robust climate adaptation strategy.
The 2 or 5 ECTS credits course involves a five-day programme in Iceland, which includes lectures, working group discussions and a field trip. In addition participants are required to read assigned relevant literature which will be available to all students in a password protected course website, and those that aim to receive 5 credits for the course must prepare and submit a short paper by May 5th2013. The papers will be reviewed by the lecturers before the course, and presented and discussed during the course. The papers will be revised and resubmitted after the course based on the reviews and the lectures.

Knowledge and Understanding
On completion of the course the participants should be able to:
- Identify key issues in climate adaptation economics and strategic climate adaptation management.
- Define and discuss key concepts related to climate adaptation economics and strategic climate adaptation management as they appear in policy discussions at different levels of governance, the business community and in the research community.
Skills and abilities
On completion of the course participants should have:
- Ability to formulate relevant research questions and evaluate the applicability of scientific studies on the economics of climate adaptation and strategic climate adaptation management.
- Ability to participate effectively in discussions and analysis of climate adaptation economics and strategic climate adaptation management.
- Ability to assess current and future challenges for the economics of climate adaptation and strategic climate adaptation management through scientific analysis.

The course will cover the following topics:
- Research on and for climate adaptation economics: Methodological and theoretical perspectives.
- The economics of the impacts of climate change and economics of climate adaptation
- How to use climate adaptation economics in decision-making at different levels of governance (local to global)
- Strategic decision-making for adaptation management: Fundamentals to designing an effective adaptation management strategy.
- Challenges for strategic decision-making for adaptation management: E.g. uncertainties in climate change impacts, financing, economic development, drivers and barriers.
- Examples from the Nordic Countries, the EU, North America and Africa, examples of adaptation strategies from regional, national and municipal governance levels will be discussed.
- Adaptation economics and its links to mitigation economics, energy security, land use, social development, infrastructure, including consideration of tradeoffs.
