Post Graduate Diploma in Disaster and Livelihood Recovery

A post disaster recovery programme provides an opportunity to build back better and improve living conditions of the people who are affected. It integrates DRR and resilience into recovery through structural measures, policies, regulations and reduces risks and vulnerabilities of the communities. It is a context for introducing sustainable housing, livelihoods and a wide range of ideas and solutions for improved development practices. A recovery programme is more than bringing the community back to its feet; it is also about catalysing development and ensuring people-centred sustainable development. The focus of the programme would be to conceptualise and deliver livelihood and social entrepreneurship initiatives through “hands-on experience” in this area with diverse development oriented organisations.
Mode of conducting
The Diploma Programme is spread over 2 semesters i.e from June to April. Of this the students will initially spend 2 weeks (after orientation by faculty over skype) with a pre-designated organization as part of Fieldwork I, followed by 8 weeks of course work in TISS,Mumbai. After 8 weeks of course work, students will go back to their respective organisation to work on 6 weeks of Internship I and 12 weeks of internship II.
The above modality is designed to specially facilitate professional working with disaster affected communities to participate in the programme. Working professional can continue to work while working on their internship I and II and thus would need only to take a 8-9 weeks break from their organization to complete the course work in Mumbai.
Students are encouraged to seek partial or full sponsorship from in-country organizations/employers and thus continue working in the community with which the organisation is already engaging with. Similarly, organisation can also nominate and sponsor individuals from within their organisation to apply for this course.
This program is being offered to students only from the SAARC region. The final selection will be made through written exams and personal interviews. Preference will be given to candidates from disaster affected communities or candidates working with organisation working in disaster affected communities.
Candidates should have a Bachelor’s Degree of minimum three years duration or its equivalent (under the 10+2+3 or 10+2+4 or 10+2+2+1 year bridge course pattern of study or any other pattern fulfilling the mandatory requirements of 15 years formal education) from a recognized university, in Arts/ Commerce/ Medicine/ Law / Nursing/ Sciences/ Engineering with a minimum average of 50 percent of marks. (40 percent for Scheduled Castes [SCs] and Scheduled Tribes [STs]).
