ContextMany farmers and pastoralists were struggling from the effects of the 2015 drought, which affected around 9 million Ethiopians, while also facing new droughts and flooding. They were using traditional forecasting methods which weren't always proving accurate in the face of climate change. Scientific-based forecasts with locally relevant predictions were set to be put in place, but people either didn't understand them or didn't trust them - or both

Aims

Intended Outcomes

To help people understand and trust modern weather forecasts in a way that would support better informed decision-making for more resilient farming and pastoralism.
Activities

Targeting: Local media professionals

  • Capacity strengthening: Training and mentoring of three radio stations

Targeting: Farmers and pastoralists from vulnerable communities in high-risk locations

  • Media: Partner radio stations produced and broadcast the following items in four local languages: Hammer, Tsemay, Bena and Konso.
    • Radio programmes, including drama- Two 10-minute radio programmes
    • Weather forecasts - Daily one-minute forecast with practical information, including a 10-day and 1-month forecasts.
Impact

Research showed that the segment on modern weather forecasts of the programme was a key highlight for many listeners.

  • 76% of listeners reported using modern forecasts.
  • More than two-thirds of listeners said they used the weather information from both programmes to inform decisions on their livelihoods.
  • 47% reported taking action after having listened to the programme.
  • They were motivated to follow, use and trust modern weather forecasts from the programmes because the forecasts were in their mother-tongue, specific to their woreda and clear to understand.
  • Some extension workers also said they rely on weather forecasts from the Walle Damma and Genna Bona for their work within the communities.
