India: Shelter reconstruction launched at flood affected Tamil Nadu

Shelter reconstruction of Tamil Nadu floods affected houses has been initiated in full swing. Reconstruction launch was simultaneously done at Puducherry and Chengalpattu on January 20, 2016.

In a formal rehabilitation assistance program launch at Puducherry, 170 flood affected people received financial assistance of Rs. 15000* each for shelter reconstruction. Token cheque was given by Most Rev. Anthony Anandaryar, Archbishop of Puducherry to the most affected marginalized section especially SC/ST, Widows, Deserted and People with Disabilities

Keeping the community as partner for development, Caritas India has made an agreement with the beneficiaries to complete the shelter reconstruction by Feb. 3, 2016.

In a similar program at Chengalpattu Rural Development Society (CRDS), Chengalpattu, another 170 affected community members were given financial assistance for shelter reconstruction. Most Rev. Neethinathan, Bishop of Chengalpattu appreciated Caritas India for the professional accompaniment to CRDS in identifying the most affected and vulnerable community irrespective of caste or religion.

Mr. John Arokiaraj, State Officer-TN suggested the community to form a group of 5 members and help each other in reconstruction work and opt for life insurance coverage policy. As a part of environment protection attempt, Dr. Haridas advised beneficiaries to plant at Pappaya, Muringa and Banana saplings in their vicinity.

As per the estimate, 738 shelters will be reconstructed in 3 districts of Kanchipuram, Cuddalore and Chennai. Cash transfer worth 15000* will be given to the completely damaged houses and another 5000 will be given to the partially damaged houses.

A press conference in this regard is called on Jan. 29, 2016 at Press Club, Chennai. This event will also see a release of the knowledge booklet describing Caritas’s flood response followed by a consultation to be participated by the key representatives from beneficiaries, Govt., inter agency group, corporate and media houses.
