The Interfaculty Department of Geoinformatics – Z_GIS (http://www.zgis.at) is an interdisciplinary department established at Paris-Lodron University Salzburg (PLUS; http://www.uni-salzburg.at). It is dedicated to fundamental and applied research, integrated spatial analysis, outreach activities and networking, professional education (http://www.unigis.net) and training. Z_GIS is strongly involved in EU-funded RTD activities, development cooperation and educational projects and is actively supporting and promoting the GMES initiative in an interdisciplinary research and communication scheme by fostering new technologies for EO-based spatial decision support and policy implementation.
Z_GIS contributes to the development of conceptual frameworks to represent risk and vulnerability analysis in the context of disaster risk reduction, climate change adaptation and vector-borne diseases. Z_GIS has developed approaches to model and represent vulnerability through innovative spatial analysis methods, going beyond traditional composite indices. This includes the integration of various spatial datasets as well as expert knowledge and participatory approaches at the community level. Assessments have been carried out in Europe (Austria), southern and eastern Africa and South Asia.
Next to such integrated modelling methods, Z_GIS is also strongly engaged in semi-automated damage mapping (e.g. after earthquakes in Haiti and Chile) and the monitoring of refugee camps in conflict zones in Africa.
allows stakeholders to inform the public about their work on DRR. The SFVC online platform is a useful toolto know who is doing what and where for the implementation of the Sendai Framework, which could foster potential collaboration among stakeholders. All stakeholders (private sector, civil society organizations, academia, media, local governments, etc.) working on DRR can submit their commitments and report on their progress and deliverables.
