The UIM is an international non-governmental, non-for-profit organisation which aims at promoting cooperation between local governments and exchange among specialists, researchers and officials to (i) favour the development of autonomous local communities, (ii) to encourage the active participation of citizens in the management of their own interests, (iii) and to improve the capabilities of local officials. Its members are mayors and officials of municipalities (mostly medium sized cities) in Latin America. The total membership is around 600. The Secretariat of UIM is assured by the Centro de Estudios Municipales y de Cooperación Internacional (CEMCI) which is the research and training centre of the Province of Granada, Spain.

The SFVC online platform is a useful toolto know who is doing what and where for the implementation of the Sendai Framework, which could foster potential collaboration among stakeholders. All stakeholders (private sector, civil society organizations, academia, media, local governments, etc.) working on DRR can submit their commitments and report on their progress and deliverables.
