Historically, the Research Group on Disaster Mitigation established in 2003 was the inception of the establishment of Research Center for Disaster Mitigation. In 2005, the research group was transformed into Center for Disaster Mitigation. Due to the increase problem in disaster mitigation in the nationwide and in line with latest research focuses selected by ITB, in 2011 the center was then expanded into a research center named as Research Center for Disaster Mitigation with wider authority and responsibility.
The vision of RCDM is to Becoming an excellent and highly respected research center that could enhance innovation in disaster mitigation at the local, national, regional and international level, as well as contributing significantly in delivering safer communities in Indonesia to overcome the disaster’s risk.

* To support the formation of disaster mitigation expert-communities in Indonesia through education.
To achieve the vision and mission, as part of university scheme, the policies and programs of RCDM ITB focused on three main tasks, i.e. education, research and community services.
In education, RCDM ITB collaboration with several institutions in enhancing the expertise of disaster mitigation through research-based post-graduate program.

In research, RCDM has been promoting and strengthening innovative fundamental and applied research activities in disaster mitigation. Several research activities has been implemented by RCDM ITB related to risk assessment and early warning systems are : Development of New Seismic Hazard Map of Indonesia 2010, Development of National Standards for Earthquake Resistance Building Design (with Dept. of Public Work), Development of National Standards for Earthquake Resistance Bridge Design (with Dept. of Public Work), Development of Earthquake Microzonation for Mega Cities in Indonesia 2011-2014, Development of Earthquake Fatality and Building-Damage Model, Development of RADIUS (Risk Assessment Tools for Diagnostic of Urban Areas Against Seismic Disaster), Development of Logic Model for Disaster Risk Reduction Policy Analysis, Investigation on the Interaction of Tectonic Strain Toward Volcanic Activity and Its Implications for Disaster Mitigation, Development of economic Losses Mapping Due To Land Subsidence, Investigation on the Building Vulnerability as input to Earthquake Risk Map, Development of Tsunami Modeling, Development of Hazard and Risk Analysis (Earthquake, Flood, Landslide, Tsunami, Volcano) etc.
In line with one of RCDM ITB programs, education, information and public awareness are also being our interest in implementing DRR activities. The activities are in the form of developing disaster education material for school community and public general, conducting seminars and workshops for increasing community awareness. Our product such as manuals, poster, booklet and leaflet have been distributed to the communities.
To support national agency with recommending the enforcement of building codes for earthquake resistant building.
In community service, several activities has been implemented to increase preparedness and capacity for effective response. The activities are in the form of training (TOT), Community Based Disaster Risk Management, Earthquake Drill, Tsunami Drill, Etc.
Recently, RCDM become one of member of Consortium of International Human Resource Development for Construction of Disaster Resilient Countries, collaboration among ASEAN Alliance Universities and Kyoto University. This program covered three of scope of works i.e. Development of education program focusing on Disaster Risk Mitigation/Recovery/Reconstruction among ASEAN Alliance Universities, ASALUs and Kyoto University ; Promoting student exchange program for Master students accredited mutually among ASALUs and Kyoto University to obtain experience in disaster recovery/reconstruction ; Promoting exchange program for young faculties among ASALUs and Kyoto University.
Through three main focus activities i.e. education, research and community service, RCDM ITB try to save more life and empower the “Community” to mitigate disaster using our expertise
allows stakeholders to inform the public about their work on DRR. The SFVC online platform is a useful toolto know who is doing what and where for the implementation of the Sendai Framework, which could foster potential collaboration among stakeholders. All stakeholders (private sector, civil society organizations, academia, media, local governments, etc.) working on DRR can submit their commitments and report on their progress and deliverables.
