Carlos Arturo GarcÃa Ocampo, engineer, Uniquindian professor, and director of this disaster risk management master's program, explained that Colombia, due to its geographic diversity and location, is exposed to a variety of natural and anthropogenic hazards. In terms of natural hazards, the country is located in a zone of high seismic and volcanic activity due to its location in the Pacific Ring of Fire. In addition, climate variability and geographical conditions make the country prone to floods, mass movements and extreme droughts.
On the other hand, engineer GarcÃa Ocampo continued, "anthropogenic hazards, which are the result of human activities, are also prevalent and include deforestation, water and air pollution, and unsustainable resource extraction and use. The sum of these threats and the degree of resistance or fragility of our territory when responding to this type of events, on many occasions, unleash disasters that cause damages and losses that affect the country's economy and also bring about regrettable losses in human lives".
It should be noted that, according to the director of the postgraduate course, Disaster Risk Management involves the identification and evaluation of these threats, as well as the implementation of measures to prevent or minimize their impact. This includes disaster planning and preparedness, building disaster-resistant infrastructure, educating and raising public awareness of hazards and how to respond to them.
