Disaster risk awareness and preparedness of the EU population: Malta
This survey on disaster risk awareness and preparedness in Malta reveals that citizens feel most vulnerable to extreme weather events (56%), followed by critical infrastructure disruptions (48%) and health emergencies (33%), with extreme weather being the dominant concern. Residents of small to mid-sized towns feel the most exposed to disasters among all urbanization types. While citizens of Malta generally trust public authorities for disaster risk information, they find it harder to access such information and feel less informed compared to other European Union countries. They primarily rely on social media for information, followed by national media and family or friends, indicating a need for more formal information channels. Despite these challenges, citizens of Malta have undertaken significantly more measures to prepare for disasters than other European residents across almost all solution types, and they demonstrate a higher level of trust in public authorities.
This serial survey assesses the awareness of EU citizens about the disaster risks that could affect them, their preparedness to face various disaster risk scenarios, and the reliance they place on a range of actors in disaster situations. The survey also explores the engagement of EU citizens in voluntary work to increase disaster resilience.
